Act 1 Scene 1


1. Soliloquy is a device used in drama where the thoughts and feelings of a character is revealed to the audience.

2. In Act 1 Scene 1 soliloquy is found from lines 1-42.

3. From Act 1 Scene 1 it can be deduced that Richard is a cruel and deceitful individual, he can also be seen as bitter. This is so because of his insecurities for he feels that he is not beautiful and deformed. His goal is to see everyone be as miserable as him.

5. This scene is taking place in a street in London. 


6. Richard delivers a soliloquy at the beginning of this scene. In it he speaks of what has happened and what his plan for destruction is.  He informs us that peace his now returned to the royal house of England and his brother Edward lV is now king. There is now celebration through out the land but he feels like an outcast because of his deformity. He then expresses his longing to make everyone as miserable as him and to become king. So he his been scheming against those in his court. His brother Clarence is his first victim, he creates a rumor that the letter 'G' will kill hi heir. 
He then see's his brother and acts shocked when he informs of the reason and tells him that Lady Grey/Queen Elizabeth is responsible for this. He says she's also to blame for Hastings imprisonment and he believes that Hastings 'sucked up' to her to get released. His gossiping is interrupted by Buckingham, who later escorts Clarence  to the prison. Hasting then enters and tells that the king is sick and he is going to visit him, Richard promises to come later. Upon Hasting's departure Richard continues to scheme.
